Jargon Buster: Amazon Terminology Decoded

Whether you’re just starting out with selling on Amazon – or you’ve been in the game for a while, there are always new terminologies and acronyms to learn and understand.

Our Molzi Jargon Buster database is your go-to glossary for everything Amazon, selling and listing. 

  • ACoS: Advertising Cost of Sale – the ad-attributed sales for your Sponsored Ads campaigns minus the ad spend. The higher the ACoS, the higher your ratio of ad cost to sales revenue.
  • ASIN: Amazon Standard Identification Number – i.e Amazon’s unique 10 digit product identification number that can be found on an Amazon product listing page.
  • A+ Content: An enhanced content offering by Amazon, available to first-party vendors, which allows them to add more detailed product information, videos, comparison charts, heightened imagery and more to product listings. 
  • Brand Registry: A program, offered by Amazon, to sellers that manufacture their own products. This program gives you more control over your listings, and greater protection from infringing or inaccurate content.
  • BSR: Best Seller Ranking – a products ranking within its category, or relative categories, on the entirety of Amazon. (i.e #1 is the Best Seller in that category, at that time).
  • Bundling: Selling products together or in a set – this can help to differentiate your product from similar on Amazon. (i.e a stapler, a pen and a ruler = desk/stationary bundle).
  • Buy Box: Where the ‘Add to cart’ or ‘Buy Now’ button is, on the right hand side of the page. When multiple sellers are selling the same product, only one will win the ‘Buy Box’.
  • Drop-Shipping: When you list and sell products on Amazon without storing any physical inventory. Orders are passed onto the manufacturer to fulfil. 
  • EBC: Enhanced Brand Content is a program, available to Amazon Sellers who are brand owners, which allows them to create more visually rich product descriptions.
  • FBA: Fulfilled By Amazon – Third party sellers send their products to Amazon’s fulfilment centres, who then handles shipping and returns. (includes: Prime Eligibility, Buy Box advantages and lower shipping rates).
  • FBM: Fulfilled By Merchant – Sellers list their products on Amazon, but handle the storage, shipping and returns themselves. (includes: higher margins, fewer Amazon fees).
  • First Party: When Amazon actually sells products – this means that Amazon is selling their own products, or brands are selling as vendors.
  • FNSKU: An Amazon generated barcode for identifying products fulfilled by Amazon.
  • Inventory: A sellers products that they have listed and are available on Amazon.
  • Keyword Rank: A product’s ranking on a search results page, based on a particular keyword.
  • Keyword: Otherwise known as a ‘search term’. Keywords are the words or phrases typed into the search bar that help your product to get found.
  • Listing: The product page on Amazon with all of the product information on.
  • Organic Sales: An organic sale is when a customer finds and buys a product without clicking ads or sponsored posts.
  • PPC: Pay Per Click – a seller is charged per click generated from their ads.
  • Retail Arbitrage: Purchasing a branded product (sometimes at discount) and reselling it for profit. 
  • Seller Central: The platform used by brands or merchants to market and sell their products on Amazon. Sellers sell their products directly to customers, using either FBA or FMA.
  • Selling Private Label: Manufacturing a product, branding it using your own brand (private label) and selling it on Amazon.
  • Selling Wholesale: Purchasing a product directly from the manufacturer and selling it on Amazon.
  • Sponsored Ads: Amazon’s PPC advertising service allowing brands, sellers and vendors, to advertise their products in search results listings, and on product pages. 
  • Storefront: A service from Amazon that allows vendors and sellers to create their own branded hub within Amazon.
  • Third Party: When independent sellers offer a variety of new, used and refurbished merchandise for purchase on the Amazon Marketplace.
  • UPC: Universal Product Code, the unique product number required to create an Amazon listing. (EAN – the same, but used in Europe).
  • Vendor Central: First-party seller management platform used by manufacturers and distributors. Vendors supply products in bulk directly to Amazon, who sells the product onto the customer. Invite only. 
  • Vendors: Amazon buys products directly from the vendor to resell – Amazon acts as a distributor (handling shipping, merchandising and returns). You will see ‘ships from and sold by Amazon’ for these products.
