eBay Jargon Buster for Sellers

eBay comes with an entire dictionary of terms. From acronyms to dashboards, there’s lots to remember. Our Molzi Jargon Buster database is your go-to glossary for everything eBay, selling and listing. We’ve got your back, the Molzi way.

The Molzi list of eBay acronyms: 

BN – Brand new

BNWT – Brand new with tags

BNIB – Brand new in box

BIN – Buy it now

NWOT – New without tags

NWOB – New without box

Announcement Boards – Special pages where eBay posts current news and information about the system, users and general announcements.

Best Match – A feature that gives buyers a way to organise search results by appropriateness. Keywords and buyer behaviour influence the ‘Best match’ list.

Bid – eBay auctioning system whereby shoppers can bid for an item.

Buy It Now – In addition to auctions, many items are available on Buy It Now, from independent sellers and brands alike. This simply means you can buy the item instantly, without and bidding or making offers.

Case – If a buyer or seller is unhappy with a transaction and requests to the resolve the issue have not progressed, the next stage is to raise a case with eBay.

Classified Ads – A type of listing a seller can use to list items, services, or properties for sale in order to generate multiple leads.

Defect Rate – The percentage of your transactions that have defects: i.e eBay Money Back Guarantee and PayPal Purchase Protection cases closed without seller resolution or seller initiated transaction cancellations.

Detailed Seller Rating – When a buyer leaves feedback, they can leave an overall rating as well as detailed seller ratings covering the accuracy of item description, communication, dispatch time and postage charge. They do not affect the overall feedback score.

eBay Time – eBay time refers to the time zone of eBay’s head office in California – which is in the Pacific Time zone.

Escrow – This practise is when a third party holds a buyer’s payment until the buyer receives an item from a seller. This is recommended by eBay for purchases over £500.

Feedback Score – Sellers and buyers can give each other feedback after any transaction. Your feedback score is used to measure your reputation. Your feedback score is an average of your scores and appears in brackets next to your user ID.

Feedback Star – Just like your feedback score, the colour of your feedback star indicates your score. For example:

  • a yellow star is 10-49 feedback points
  • a blue star is 50-99 feedback points
  • a turquoise star is 100-499 feedback points
  • a purple star is 500 to 999 feedback points
  • a red start is 1000-4,999
  • and so on…

Final Value Fee – This refers to the fee that eBay charges the seller after the item has sold. The fee is based on the final value of the item.

Fixed Price – Otherwise known as ‘Buy It Now’. There is no auction and the item is at a set price.

Get It Fast – The Get It Fast programme helps buyers to find items that can be delivered quickly.

Insertion Fee – The fee eBay charges for listing an item.

My eBay – A central dashboard where you can manage all of your account activities and items.

Payflow – A secure payment gateway service for processing credit or debit payments. As an online merchant – you’ll need to sign up for a free Payflow account.

PayPal – A commonly used and highly secure payment method offered by most eBay sellers.

Power Seller – An eBay seller who has maintained a 98% positive feedback score.

Private Auction Listing – A listing where the bidder names are not displayed to each other.

Proxy Bidding – This allows a seller to submit an amount they are willing to bid up to, but eBay bids on their behalf so they don’t have to physically attend the auction.

Relisting – Automatically or manually listing an item for a further time period. If an item is relisted a second time, and sells, eBay will refund the insertion fee.

Request – This is the first stage in resolving a transaction issue. i.e a return or reporting that the item was not received.

Resolution Centre – Helps resolve problem between buyers and sellers, such as unpaid items etc.

Reviews – Just as users can leave feedback relating to transactions and sellers, reviews are feedback on the products purchased.

Safety Centre – A place within eBay where users can learn about being safer on eBay – especially when it comes to money transfers, photos, dangerous or illegal items and age limits.

Seller – In short, a seller is someone who sells on eBay.

Seller Standards Dashboard – This dashboard is a tool to enable sellers to look after their seller ratings.

Selling Manager – A further dashboard that allows sellers to control all of their listings and sales activities, such as feedback, emails and payments.

Selling Manager Pro – An advanced version of Selling Manager that includes inventory tracking, bulk item listings and profit and loss reporting.

Shill bidding – Deliberate placing of bids to up an items sale price. This is very much against eBay’s rules.

Sniping – Placing a bid in the closing seconds of an auction, often ‘sniping’ the item from another bidder.

Title Search – The process of entering/searching appropriate keywords as they will likely appear in the item title.
